Government to issue notice to ONGC on oil leak issue in Nagapattinam

NEW DELHI/NAGAPATTINAM: Worried over the impact on marine lives and agriculture due to recent incidents of crude oil leak in two villages of Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, the Environment Ministry has decided to issue notice to ONGC asking it to decommission an abandoned pipeline responsible for oil leak. 

Cyclone leaves a trail of misery, destruction and destitution

Pushed by the cyclonic storm, the sea heaved higher and higher, and whipped up mist, and taunted the sturdy breakwaters that secure Nagapattinam port on Wednesday. On land, lashing rain and stormy wind - that persisted since Monday and lasted till Wednesday evening - made life sticky for destitute humans and animals – all left at the mercy of cyclone Nilam and their ability to survive through it all. 

Cyclone Nilam nears TN, AP coast; communication, power may be hit

New Delhi: As the US deals with Superstorm Sandy, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are bracing for Cyclone Nilam. It is less than 300 kilometres south east from Chennai's coast and is expected to move to region between Cuddalore Tamil Nadu and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh by Wednesday evening. Met Department Deputy Director SR Ramanan has said that the cyclone is expected to cross between Puducherry and Nellore between 4 pm and 4:22 pm. 

Central team tours Cauvery delta in TN

A four-member technical expert team of the Central Water Commission (CWC) led by Chief Engineer R K Gupta began a three-day inspection of the Cauvery delta districts of Tamil Nadu on Friday to “ascertain the ground situation and the water requirements” of farmers.

TN to increase power supply in delta region

Following farmers' demands for 12 hours of three-phase electricity supply to power irrigation pump sets for raising summer crop of paddy, the Chief Minister announced the financial support to enable the utility buy power. This will support the ‘Kuruvai' paddy cultivation, the short term, summer crop in the Cauvery Delta regions.

Rising sea level threatens India’s coastal areas

The study, using digital elevation model data (90 m resolution), digital image processing and GIS software, showed that the rise in sea level by 1.0 m and 2.0 m will result in the inundation of an estimated 4.2 sq km and 42.5 sq km land respectively in the region surrounding Nagapattinam.

TN to modernise irrigation canals in Cauvery Delta ( Rs 1,560 crore plan)

CHENNAI: With a view to protect Cauvery delta, the granary of Tamil Nadu, from effects of climatic change in the next four decades, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced a massive scheme to prevent sea water intrusion into delta areas in coastal districts and store flood waters for irrigation during summer, at a cost of Rs 1,560 crore. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to provide Rs 1,092 crore as loan while the State government would provide Rs 498 crore for this project, the CM said in the State Assembly.

HC directs regulation of sand quarrying in Cauvery

Madurai, Apr 24 (PTI) Madurai Bench of Madras High Court today directed the Collectors of five districts in Cauvery delta to regulate sand quarrying in Cauvery and Kollidam rivers. The directive to the District Collectors of Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur was issued by Justice R Banumathi and Justice B Rajendran,in their interim order, while admitting a PIL petition.
