45 day ban on fishing comes into effect from April 15

Chennai:  Hundreds of mechanized boats in Nagapattinam and Karaikal districts will not put out to sea from today for one and half months as the annual 45 day ban on fishing these coastal areas comes into force from today.  The Governments of Tamil Nadu and Pondy had imposed the ban under provisions of the Deep sea Fishing Regulation Act, 2001. 

Tsunami looks unlikely, don’t panic: Cabinet Secy

New Delhi: Union Cabinet secretary Ajit Kumar Seth on Wednesday said that Tsunami looks unlikely and there is no need to panic.  Talking to reporters Seth said, “India is fully prepared to tackle Tsunami”.  Seth said that that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has issued instructions and wanted all precautionary measures to be taken.

Olive ridleys let into sea in Nagapattinam

Nagapattinam:  As many as 281 olive ridleys, hatched in the artificial hatchery run by Forest Department at Kodiakarai, were let into the sea.  Kodiakarai and Vedaranyam areas in Nagapattinam coast attract a large number of olive ridleys (sea turtle) every year during the nesting season, which begins in December and continues till March.

Fishermen to stage demo over 'delay' in cyclone relief

Puducherry:  Fishermen in the union territory today said they would stage a demonstration before the Fisheries Department office on February 13 to protest the 'delay' in giving relief to those affected by the December 30 cyclone Thane.

Delta to see record harvest

THANJAVUR: The Cauvery delta region of Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts will witness record harvest of Samba and Thaladi crops, assured agriculture department officials in the region.
